A Model for Improving Patient Engagement and Data Integration with PCORnet Patient-Powered Research Networks and Payer Stakeholders
Name of Study
A Model for Improving Patient Engagement and Data Integration with PCORnet Patient-Powered Research Networks and Payer Stakeholders
Principal Investigator and Institution
Kevin Haynes, MS, PharmD
HealthCore
Goals
This proposal seeks to confirm the ability to find patients with diseases of interest using diagnostic codes submitted to large insurers as part of the payment reimbursement for care. Patients would then be invited to participate in patient-centered research by joining patient powered research networks (PPRN) involved in the Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet).
The significance of this proposal is to expand the population of patients who may be appropriate for PPRN participation. This will be achieved by involving a large commercial insurance provider to increase the diversity of patients who may be engaged in future PCOR opportunities. A notable outcome of the proposed research will be to connect patient data between a large commercial payer and participating PPRNs. Data integration that maintains patient privacy is vital to the conduct of patient-oriented research.
Status
The study proposal was submitted to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and awarded in 2015.
ABOUT’s Role
ABOUT will be working with HealthCore to test mechanisms for linking health claims data from patients who are insured through Anthem and have also enrolled in ABOUT. ABOUT will also participate in testing mechanisms to message patients insured through Anthem who have a medical history that is consistent with HBOC to invite them to join the ABOUT Network.
